Protein ‘Zʼ is a glycoprotein which is Vitamin ‘Kʼ dependent. Protein ‘Zʼ is produced by the liver and participates as a cofactor in blood coagulation where it directly inhibits the procoagulatory activity of ‘Factor Xaʼ. Protein ‘Zʼ insufficiency can be hereditary or acquired by auto antibodies against Protein ‘Zʼ. There is also a risk of thromboembolism and pregnancy complications. Any kind of relevant insufficiency is however extremely rare and therefore other causes should be considered.
