Medical Microbiology

We think microorganisms are good. Above all,
 fast and reliable.

Medical Microbiology at labor team

Whether tuberculosis, malaria, AIDS or influenza – infectious diseases are among the worst scourges of humanity and claim millions of lives every year. Infections are caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites that actively or passively invade the body. Since they often multiply there within a very short time, a quick and reliable diagnosis is indispensable. The Medical Microbiology department of our laboratory makes exactly that possible: thanks to the most modern and highly sensitive detection methods, we can quickly identify pathogens of any kind and ensure that a specific therapy for the patient is initiated promptly.

Microbiological diagnostics: From pathogen detection to screening

Pathogen diagnostics in our microbiology laboratory is carried out using conventional methods (microscope, pathogen cultivation in cultures), serological methods (detection of microbial antigens and specific antibodies) as well as highly advanced molecular biological techniques (PCR, DNA sequencing). In addition to pathogen detection, we carry out resistance tests to identify therapeutically optimally effective drugs. Furthermore, our laboratory specialises in screening examinations for hospitals and practices: Multi-resistant pathogens (MRSA, VRE, MRGN) pose an increasing threat and therefore require continuous and close-meshed microbiological monitoring.

Advantages of a microbiological examination at labor team

  • Many years of microbiological expertise (Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Parasitology)
  • Broad spectrum of methods for rapid and reliable pathogen detection
  • Cooperation with external experts for additional examinations and second opinions
  • Prompt transmission of findings by telephone, e-mail, fax or post
  • Findings in German, French, Italian and English version
  • Comprehensive Quality Management (ISO 15189:2022 accreditation initialised)

Preanalytics for microbiological investigations

Depending on the localisation of the infection, blood, cerebrospinal fluid, stool, urine, bronchial secretion and tissue samples or (mucus) skin and wound swabs serve as examination material for microbiological diagnostics. In order to ensure an optimal diagnosis, it is important to take samples correctly. We have therefore compiled comprehensive information on preanalytics for you.
