Citalopram

Citalopram and escitalopram represent medication of the ‘SSRI’ group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, but escitalopram is the active s-enantiomer ingredient in citalopram. Both agents are administered for the treatment of depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorders and ‘angst’ complaints, for their anti-depressive characteristics. The medical effect is based on the inhibition of the reuptake of serotonin in the presynaptic cells, whereby serotonin develops a longer time effect on the post-synaptic membranes and thus combats depression. Possible side effects range from somnolence, agitation through to libido diminution.
