HIV-1 RNA quantitative (PCR)
Material & Volume
2x EDTA Blood
Clinical information
The measurement of HIV-1 RNA viral load in blood plasma using nucleic acid-based molecular diagnostic assays is considered the standard for assessing the prognosis of HIV-positive patients and for assessing the viral response to treatment with antiretroviral agents.
Detection of viral RNA by PCR: positive at the earliest about 10-11 days after a risk situation (www.rki.de).
As part of the FOPH's new HIV test guideline 2025 of 21 December 2024, the nucleic acid-based detection of HIV-1 RNA can be used by the laboratory performing the test as a confirmatory test for a reactive HIV screening test (HIV-specific AK and HIV-1 p24 antigen; 4th gene, CE IVD).
The PCR test HIV-1 quantitative (RNA) only detects the HIV subtype HIV-1, which is predominant in Switzerland and Europe.
