After blood collection, the sample must be centrifuged as quickly as possible and the plasma separated. In uncentrifuged blood, pyruvate continues to be metabolized by the cells, resulting in significantly lower concentrations being measured within a short period of time. The sample is stable in separated fluoride plasma.
