Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) was first isolated in 2001 as a new member of the Paramyxoviridae family.
hMPV replicates in the respiratory tract and predominantly affects infants and children. In this age group, it accounts for up to 15 % of the annual bronchiolitis cases.
