Clinical information
Dermatophytes are fungi that can infect skin, hair and nails. They belong to the group of filamentous fungi (Ascomycota) and are responsible for various skin diseases such as ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete's foot (tinea pedis) or nail fungus (tinea unguium). Dermatophytes feed on keratin, a protein found in skin, hair and nails. Infection with dermatophytes is called dermatophytosis and can be favoured by direct contact with infected people or animals, contaminated objects or by entering moist, warm environments.
With this PCR panel, anthropophilic, zoophilic and geophilic dermatophytes of the medically relevant genera Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton and also certain yeasts (including C. albicans, C. parapsilosis) and moulds (including Fusarium solani) can be detected.
Compared to the lengthy and demanding cultural determination, existing dermatomycosis pathogens are reliably detected by molecular biological diagnostics even in the case of mixed infections or in the case of organisms that have already been killed.
