Clinical information
The quaternary ammonium compounds choline, betaine and dimethylglycine are part of a metabolic pathway associated with the synthesis of neurotransmitters and membrane phospholipids. Betaine serves as a methyl donor for the enzyme betaine homocysteine methyltransferase, which catalyses the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. A therapeutic effect of betaine in homocystinuria and generally in the moderate reduction of homocysteine in blood plasma is being discussed in the scientific literature.
