An infection with human herpes virus 7 (HHV-7) is the cause of the common childhood illness exanthema subitum which is usually self-limiting. Once the infection has healed, the virus remains latent in the body for the rest of the patient's life.
If the immune defence is weakened (e.g. immunosuppression in transplant patients), the reactivation of the virus can lead to serious clinical complications.
