Azoospermia factors

The AZF (azoospermia factor) region on the long arm of the Y chromosome (Yq11) contains several genes essential for spermatogenesis and is divided into the AZFa, AZFb and AZFc subregions. Microdeletions in these regions are among the most common genetic causes of male infertility and are detected in approximately 5–10% of men with non-obstructive azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia.

In addition to testing for AZF deletions on the Y chromosome, a chromosome analysis may be carried out in cases of azoospermia, and – particularly where an obstructive cause is suspected – an analysis of the CFTR gene may also be performed.
